Paulette Rees-Denis in Brisbane - Feb 2010 - Early Bird Deposits due August 31

hi everyone

phew! We've had such a busy few weeks, with the big weekend for Feast of the Senses, and the DVD now at the printers - we're issuing the prepaid orders as soon as they arrive, so if you'd like to order a double DVD of our concert ($30 & postage) singlet ($25 & postage limited sizes available)or black dance bag (bargain $5 & postage) please let me know!

I'm really excited to start promoting our next big event in Brisbane - Paulette Rees-Denis is coming here in February 2010!! I'm so excited, and just pleased to be able to see my teacher again and continue on my own dance path, and give you the opportunity also to dance with this wonderful woman. I thought I'd share some of my thoughts on the Collective Soul program....

For me my decision to undertake Collective Soul was a personal one, to step up and really undergo that intensive training. I'd experienced Paulette's wonderful workshops before and knew I wanted more....they ARE challenging absolutely, but I also agree we all love this dance because of the challenge, and the connection we all receive. As a dance teacher I felt so inspired to take on more in my classes, to explore more of the rhythms I'd touched on in my dance history but perhaps had not explored with my students, to continue to push myself and my students into areas of growth....as a dance student I was just so happy to be a sponge and listen, and learn, ask questions, and experience it. For me it really did give me so much direction and confidence in my own dance and my school, and I would encourage anyone who has the funds and the time to do it - its a wonderful experience, and I think learning direct from a master teacher is an absolute blessing.

Early Bird Deposits for all workshops & Collective Soul & Teacher Training Intensives will be due at the end of this month. Please let me know if you'd like to confirm your attendance, as once I have the final numbers I can confirm if the courses can be discounted further. All info about the price & courses is available either via my website or I can email you a document with the goss.

Also if you and your community are still yet to master the basics with Gypsy Caravan dance format and would like to be involved in the workshops either in Brisbane, or around Australia please talk to me, if I can travel or put you in touch with someone who's able to help you get the best out of your dance now's the time we need to plan. Paulette's DVD series is a wonderful tool to help learn this dance, and can be ordered direct from her site.

Hope to see you in Brisbane in 2010!
Cheers
Dee

Tribal Student Soiree in Newcastle?

Hi everyone

just testing the waters about the next tribal student soiree. Me thinks it is time Newcastle dancers put up their hands and host the next soiree in November. The dates could be 1, 8 or 15 November. Hoping these dates are convenient, squeezing ourselves in between other dance happenings and Christmas.

Cheers, Susan

Very excited that Karen & Lorraine will be playing darabuka at Hilary's 4 July workshops and also at the hafla that night.... will definitely add some juice to the event.....(see previous post for all workshop & hafla details)

The Belly Temple hafla on July 4 is also the launch party for the Wild Honey Dance Festival that is happening in Byron 22-27 September.
Hilary is also taking workshops at Wild Honey, along with Melusina, Maria Sangiori and lots more....

Definitely worth traveling to the gorgeous Byron shire for both of these events... plenty of budget accom available and the possibility of staying with billets....

Byron Bay tribalistas?

So, I've lived in San Francisco, then Toronto and now currently Melbourne. Lucky me I have been able to study and dance in each of these places (Fat Chance, The DarkSide & UnderBelly). I'm contemplating a move to the Byron area for the months of April and May and of course have to take the ability to train and dance into my decision process!

I've checked tribe and googled for info but can't find any consistent classes or troupes that live in Byron, or perhaps I'm missing something. I'm also considering teaching a month and bit if there is interest, just a basic tribal fusion class to teach the foundations, but am not sure as it will depend on how easily I find a good place to live and settle into life there for a couple of months.

Anyways, please let me know if you're in the area or can point me to a troupe, classes, new friends to practice with. I have studied ATS and tribal fusion for about 5 years now and am part of a troupe back in Toronto.

2010 workshop interest - Jeff Rees Gypsy Caravan in Brisbane?

Hello

Im trying to gather interest in a series of workshops to be run by Jeff Rees from Gypsy Caravan....We will be hosting Paulette Rees-Denis from February 2 - 12 next year for a series of dance workshops & Collective Soul Intensives, and Jeff will be joining Paulette on her travels from February 7-12 so Brisbane & local muso's have the opportunity to learn from him direct.

More about Jeff: (taken from http://www.gypsycaravan.us/bellydance-music.php)
Gypsy Caravan and Mizna musical instigators Bruce Beaton and Jeff Rees have led the musical gypsy trail for Gypsy Caravan since 1991. The musicians of Gypsy Caravan and Mizna have a diverse background. The band performs a stylized blend of the music of North Africa, Spain, India, the Middle and Near East, with a contemporary American sensibility. Sometimes lively, sometimes mesmerizing, the songs evoke varying scenarios, from the lonely campfire of the hejira to the silken wealth of the caravanserai.
Gypsy Caravan has an extensive repertoire of original songs, with seven music CDs on the market, and they enjoy playing at variety of performance requests, from large theatrical productions and art festivals, to smaller nightclubs and intimate celebrations.

For those who are unfamiliar with Gypsy Caravan & Mizna itunes their albums available for listening or to purchase.

Jeff's Workshop topics can cover the art of playing the mijwiz, as well as demonstrating other horns including the Neys, sipsis, zurnas, small arguls....as well as topics utilising playing and learning rhythms and listening to melodies for dancers - we can also arrange private tuition for learning the Ney (Turkish flute)

What I'm trying to determine is if there is a level of interest to support Jeff's classes, if you'd like the opportunity to study with him - if I've got a good response I'll do my best to cater for your interest.

Cheers
Dee

This weekend I'm sending out Feast of the Senses posters, flyers and tickets to all those who've paid. If i dont have your postal address please send it to me at tribalblossoms@iinet.net.au.

In totally exciting news - Simone Pope from the Flamenco Studio has confirmed her attendance, and her performance at our gala supported by guitarist Andrew Veivers...truly inspiring Flamenco it will be a brilliant part of our night.

I'm also really excited to say the response over the last two weeks means we're down to our last 50 workshop tickets, still able to be bought as the Early Bird Special for $100. A lot of people are paying in two instalments of $50 so if you or your students want to come but havent yet put your hand up now is the time, as I'd hate for you to miss out once we're fully booked.

Keep an eye on my website for any changes to the workshop times, otherwise let me know if you're coming!!

Cheers

Dear everyone,

I was not going to broadcast this message to everyone, but then realised that there are so many people out there who have been touched by our dear Betsy (Betsy Watkins from W.A.) that I decided that I just have to let you know.

Our darling Betsy passed away this morning, peacefully at home following her battle with cancer.

We have been so blessed to know Betsy. For the last two years she has been a beautiful and much loved member of Free Spirit Gypsy Tribal and Tribalive.

She also met many of you at the General Skills Intensive in Katoomba last year.

Her cheeky smile, quiet joy and beautiful dancing will live in our hearts forever.

Blessing to all, Anne

Tribal Blossoms update - new class in Ipswich coming April 2009

HI everyone

2009 is well and truly here with a big arrival - our classes have been full of beautiful ladies keen to learn our style, but of course we've got room for more in our circle!

We're so excited we've decided to expand and are pleased to announce a Tribal Basics class will be on offer in Ipswich as of April 22. Wednesday evenings from 6 - 7pm we'll be teaching a 10 week course at Allstar Dance Academy - Shop 5 Clay St West Ipswich (on the corner of Brisbane St, behind Des's diner).

Our Tribal Basics course costs $120 and will introduce you to the Gypsy Caravan format, and of course mastering both sides of your body as you learn to recognise and move to the tribal beat!

Tribal Bellydance focuses on posture, and understanding of the basic dialogue which can then be shared in this community based style. The dance is powerful, and strong and completely unlike anything you've seen before - tell a friend and come along together :) Our classes are friendly and determined, technique is our passion!

Brisbane’s first Bellydance School focused exclusively on Tribal Style Bellydance - we offer classes across different levels to motivate and encourage your individual dance growth. We also regularly hold workshops to focus on particular areas of the dance, including Sword mastery and skills.

Formed in 2006 Tribal Blossoms offers tuition & performance in Gypsy Caravan & American Tribal Style (ATS) Bellydance. With influences from the Silk Road, Middle East & beyond this dance evokes memories of how groups used to dance – with passion and sharing, captivating while remaining connected as a group.

We're also really excited to announce a 10 week course in Drumming - with Heidi offering classes in Middle Eastern rhythms on Thursday nights for 2009 - so if you're a dancer wanting to add that extra dimension to your dance, or if you've always wanted to master the tabla - come along, classes are friendly and focused to get you learning! Open to all levels!

Keep your eyes peeled to our website for video links and coming events! www.tribalblossoms.com

Cheers
Dee

Good morning all

(hi Susan!!)

yep I agree, tribe's been a bit quiet - i've moved mainly to facebook these days actually.

Whats news in your woods girls?

I've been mega inspired from going to Adelaide, doing CS1 with Paulette and the workshops, dancing with the ladies there and just being so impressed by the calibre of talent....came back like a big gust of wind and finetuning and sharing the new moves with the blossoms. I love that part of the process means I've been "unlocking" some of our dance, taking out some of the rules we'd set down to widen our dance vocab. I'm so motivated by my new students this year, its funny what a new face in the room brings....but you know we're midway through term 1 so I know that some wont be back next term, as is typical of some ladies who only join us for a little while. We're starting to plan for Feast, and all the things to help get us there - including doing some community performances that help ease the performance nerves.

Please share what you've been up to!

Would anyone be interested in attending AUS Workshop Intensives with some renowned San Franciscian Fusion Dancers???

Ive been wondering about the degree of tribal fusion happaning in Australia, and am gathering interest from any australian dancers interested in training with some of the pioneers in tribal fusion dance, In Australia!. What dancers in particular would you all love to train with and how intensive would you ideally and realistically want training to be?- ie, two hour workshops per day over 6 days? 6 hours a day? A residential intensive?...... Also please mention where you are located and whether youd be prepared to travel interstate if necessary, or where is your dream location for this kind of event. Afterall this land is the DreamTime!. I would love to hear your thoughts. I will be attending Tribal fest and San Francisco Tribal Mecca Immersion this year and am gathering this information in the spirit of having more tribal fusion training available in Australia!!!!!!!!!!!
Big Skirts & Big Beats - Brisbane Fundraiser Feb 27

Hello friend in Dance & Rhythms

Just sharing info about a night we're arranging at short notice to help raise funds for the Australian Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal....this is an open jam night where we'd like to see as many dancers and drummers join us together as a community to send blessings & donate some funds to help our fellow Australians in need.

FRIDAY NIGHT FEB 27 - 7.30 - 10PM AT DANCEWORKS STUDIOS, 19 BURKE ST WOOLLOONGABBA. $5 ENTRY FOR ALL DRUMMERS, DANCERS & FANS.

INVITATION TO ALL DANCERS & DRUMMERS TO JOIN US

We’re looking to open our doors to an open jam - an informal night where we hope to donate all profits to the Australian Red Cross. Regardless of style you do - Tribal or Cabaret, Folk or Latin, African or Middle Eastern there is room in our circle for all of us to join in a night aimed to raise funds for the Bushfire victims & their families.

We’ll be providing space & music for you to enjoy - forget the formal costumes, just bring your drummers, dancers and their big skirts….this isn’t a formal haffla with a line-up - we’re inviting your group to join our tribe in a vision of dance & drumming to help others in need. If you’re keen please let us know - either email or just turn up.

In the interest of keeping costs down we’re not printing invites so please share this pdf with whoever you think would like to join in and support this cause.

I'm sure many of you know people that may have been affected by this devastation, and I came up with the idea for us all to come up with a positive result for those down south, it would be awesome to see our dancers and drummers enjoying themselves in a casual atmosphere....something a little different from when we normally get together.

I understand this is short notice and you may have prior commitments, you may also be keen to arrange your own event or if you'd like to make a personal donation of your own there information on the following site http://www.redcross.org.au/default.asp. Please pass this information on to anyone who you think would like to support or join in.

Otherwise I hope we can see you next week, if only for a little while :)
Cheers
Dee

Feast of the Senses 2009 - want to come & dance & learn with us?

Hello

With the fast arriving end of 2008, its getting time for the Blossoms to start planning our next Feast of the Senses event - due for Winter 2009. We began Feast of the Senses with a view to creating a Tribal-themed event in Brisbane highlighting both local and regional & interstate talent. We also incorporated an Art display within the venue, and artworks were sold, food was enjoyed and a great time was had by all!

Afterwards we got to thinking, with the view to repeating our event every two years - and expanding on what was offered. We're now looking to run Feast of the Senses as a two-day mini-festival - with a Tribal-focused performance night at a swanky venue (to be finalised) and a day of workshops aimed at the Tribal Bellydancer to enjoy. Ideally this would occur with a Saturday night gala, then all the workshops at our inner-city venue on Sunday kicking off at 10am with a variety of classes on offer running til about 4pm when we'll all join in for a drumming/dancing jam at the end.

I'm looking to offer an all inclusive ticket for any interested attendees - with an early bird price of $100 which will include Gala night entry, and up to 5 workshops on offer. The workshops will be running consecutively so you can get as much or as little as you want - your ticket will provide you entry to any class you wish to book for....there'll also be stalls available with tribal goodies, and food will be available to enjoy in your break. We'll also have space within the market area for you to practice with your dance buddies what you've just learned, or relax with a massage or just chill in the corner over a cup of chai.

I'm trying to lock in two dates right now - with a view to either June 27 & 28 OR July 25 & 26 - if you have something planned or know of another event around this time please let me know, as I'd lock not to compete for our dancing interest where possible. I hope to have dates confirmed by Christmas or sooner, at which time I'll also be able to send out an info pack about areas close to our venues to stay that may suit your troupe. I know theres some great offers on sale via the various airlines so the sooner I can get this info to you the better - flights to Brisbane are bargains right now - you can fly to & from Sydney for approx $200, to & from Adelaide & Cairns for approx $300, to & from Tassie for approx $135 each way, Perth is about $300 each way at the moment.

I'm trying to get interest right now - from Tribal Troupes who'd like to come and perform, Students who think this is right up their alley - as well as some feedback of what you'd like to see on offer from the workshops. We've got some of the workshop content planned but there is still an avenue for additional Tribal workshops if you'd like to present....please talk to me and help make Feast of the Senses 2009 fantastic!!!

Cheers
Dee

Paulette's Tasmanian workshops - two places left!

Hi all

Just a quick heads up to let me know if you want to come along to Paulette's workshops - There are only two places left. We are starting the weekend with her technique class on Saturday and on Sunday are doing improv and group formations, so they are suitable for those with limited tribal experience as well as those who want to focus on technique or be introduced to Gypsy Caravan styling (be prepared to use the left and right sides).

Just send me an email if you want or phone me on 0409 863 339. We have quite a lot of interstate visitors, so it will be a good weekend where we get to meet lots of new people and "network" (love that word - so corporate 90's, but oh so true! and very tribal as we all like to network with other groups to see what they are doing and how they do it!)

Thanks and enjoy 2009

The bra will fit a 36-38 C. The bra is covered in a white fabric that has a texture feel to it . The bra has white gimp trim across the top with a row of shells . The bra is adorned with faux pearls in various shapes and sizes . The drape down the front is about 9 inches long. The bra will tie criss cross across the back with the use of D-rings

The belt is covered in the same fabric as the bra. Across the top it has a the gimp trim and the shells. The belt is also adorned with the faux pearls as the bra. The belt has and elastic casing that can be gathered to help better fit the dancer with curves. The rag fringe is made from an assortment of yarns, lace gimp trim, and fabric. The rag fringe will hand the length of the skirt.

Tribal Sword workshop - Adelaide - Thursday Feb 12 2009

HI everyone

the lovely Acushla from Sacred Tribe Dance Studios has invited me to teach a Tribal Sword workshop while I'm in Adelaide for Paulette's workshops & Collective Soul studies...so if you are planning on heading to Adelaide for the workshops, or are in town and want some extra dance come along!!

I'm now going to copy directly from the flyer which is available either from Acushla or from me via email if you want a copy sent

TRIBAL SWORD WORKSHOP - THURSDAY FEB 12 2009 - 2 HOURS $50

SACRED TRIBE DANCE STUDIOS IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE A MID-WEEK TRIBAL SWORD WORKSHOP WITH DEE FROM TRIBAL BLOSSOMS.

Tribal Blossoms Director Dee Thomson has been studying sword dance since 2002, long before Tribal came to inspire her life – in this workshop you’ll learn valuable sword technique to bring a strong & deadly approach to your dance routine. Dee taught her Deadly Sword workshop at Sydney’s Tribal Trance Festival to great response, so this is a fantastic opportunity for students to get into the nitty gritty and get comfortable with their blades!

The workshop will cater to those who are seeking a technique focus, with opportunity to incorporate different formations to create interesting shapes in your dance. Dee will discuss sword handling & care, and methods to incorporate Sword as your new dance partner, and ways to approach this within the Tribal aesthetic. No prior Sword dance experience is needed, however an understanding of both ATS & Tribal bellydance will aid the attendee.

Swords are available to hire if you don’t have a sword – please confirm prior to ensure one is available for you. Also if you have a spare sword & are happy to share/lend please let Acushla know :) Sword hire is $10 each but you MUST confirm if you’d like one as we need to arrange transport from Brisbane.

Tribal Blossoms Bellydance provides tribal tuition & performance in Brisbane. Classes deliver technique primarily in Gypsy Caravan format with strong emphasis on cues, to encourage movement within an improvised format. Tribal Blossoms hold a bi-annual festival in Brisbane called the Feast of The Senses which in 2009 will also offer a full day of workshops for the tribal dancer.
Learn more at www.tribalblossoms.com

Sword Workshop Bookings & location details - contact Acushla - acushla@sacredtribalbellydance.com.au or phone 0410298801 to secure your place.

Hi everyone, Nice to meet you :)

I'm a French dancer from Germany, already reading this, you can guess I love travelling.
I'm thinking of participating to the Mid North Coast Bellydance Festival 2009, hold in Kempsey by Shanna.
http://www.festival.ishtarbellydance.com/modules/wfchannel/
Anyone been there already? Do you have experience to share? I mean, it's a huge trip (and a lot of money), so I'd love to have some opinions.

Should I be there. I hope to meet some of you and I would be happy to perform or teach. I'm not everyday in Australia :)

Bye!

I have two pairs of MeloPhoenix pants for sale that are unfortunately too big for me to wear.
One pair are grey Turkstars size L, the other are charcoal Garter Stripes size XL.

Both pairs have only been worn 2 or 3 times each in class and well looked after. The fit of these are a bit tighter than normal Melos, the fabric is a bit thicker and not quite as stretchy. You can check out pics and sizing @ www.phoenixrisingartists.com
I would love for them to go to a good, careful home please!

Oops, price would be good. $100 each pair plus postage in Australia or if you are going to Tribal and Trance Fest i'm doing a workshop on the Sat so I could bring them along.

Thanks

Tribal allsorts - Tribal Trance fest trivia /mixer - show me the money

hi everyone

I hope you are all warm, rested and looking forward to the Tribal Trance fest thats now only 6 weeks away or so?

I'm putting a call out now to let everyone know the deadline is coming up for the Tribal Allsorts night - as its a catered event we need to get all payment and numbers before the event to let the venue know (and to stop those unflattering grey hairs :) ). We'll have prizes and plans in place only for those who book and pre-pay so please note we wont be selling tickets at the door.

so if you or your troupe would like to come along - please email me at tribalblossoms@iinet.net.au before AUGUST 22

I understand some people have been afraid they havent known too much to take part, so please know this is just a cocktail event, a low-key chance for anyone who's interested in meeting the tribal community and to give us all a chance to network - given how we'll be focused so much on the workshops this is just a chance to have that conversation and meet up outside of the dance class!

So far tribes attending include the ladies from Triballive, UrbanQabila, Gypsy Noir and Tribal Blossoms....we're all pretty friendly so come along!

otherwise, hope to see you at the festival!

Cheers
Dee

Promoting workshops?

I need some help here please ladies!

How do you go about promoting workshops that you host? I've put notices up on Tribe, Facebook advertised thru the OMEDA e-Bulletin, word of mouth from other dancers. Are there any other avenues that I could be missing?

What do you do?
What do you find most effective?

Many thanks in advance for any ideas.
Amanda :-)

Tribal Jam for WA

From Amy, via Betsy:
Hi tribal dancers,
I'm sending this to try to suss out some feedback on my idea of
hosting a tribal dance party for anyone interested in tribal style
bellydance in WA.

I think it's time for us to come together as a community of tribal
dancers in WA. There are now so many groups and individual dancers
out there who I, for one, would love to hook up with and just have a
dance with.

So my intention is to have a party at a venue near Freo (which is not
someone's studio; neutral ground and all that). We have in mind a big
lofty space where we can light up our fire toys (the venue is not
confirmed yet tho). And the date we are thinking is Halloween; Friday
31 October. The event will be not for profit, though we would have to
charge a small entry fee to cover venue hire costs (less than $5). I
anticipate lots of candles, a variety of music, fire toys, lots of
dancers dressed tribalesque... it will be a blast!...and I would like
to keep it kinda home spun, so would ask people to bring and share
food and drinks. There would be no set performance line up, but if
your group wants to perform, just seize the sound system and do it!

As I've said, the event will be not for profit, any left over funds
will be donated to a charity (non-belly related) and it is also not
for self-promotion, though I'd encourage you to bring info to
exchange about your classes, events etc. I really want this to be in
the genuine spirit of bringing together the tribal dance community in
WA, so this would be an open invitation to anyone who is into tribal
dancing, regardless of whether you have just dabbled a bit or have
devoted your last 10 years to it!

At this stage, i'm just looking to see if this idea is a goer and for
any ideas or comments about it. (eg; is friday to difficult for
country girls?) and how many people might be interested. If I get
positive feedback, expect an invitation soon!

I've tried to send this to as many email addresses as I can but
please pass this email on to anyone you think might be interested, I
would hate for anyone or any group to be missed out just because I
don't know about them. Please reply with any comments to
tribalive@... I look forward to hearing from you within the next
week or so, so we can start planning in earnest :)

Love
Amy
Tribalive!

we have drummers!

One of my students is learning to drum middle eastern rhythms. Has been taking lessons as and when he can afford to attend workshops etc. I also know of a drummer who has begun to teach my student more about rhythms and technique.

The big thing is the drummer who is teaching said he had never drummed for ATS dancers before. He is fully aware of the ATS improv situation, so was asking me what the cues to a drummer were ... I confess do not know any cues you would give to a drummer, because we have not had the opportunity/luxury of a live drummer before at our classes or performances - except for a bit mosh pit tribal jam at the end of concerts and soirees.

So his question is what are the cues for

Changing Rhythm
Faster
Slower
Loud
Quiet
Finish

If you were working all the time with the same drummer, you would build your own vocabulary of cues, or keep to agreed patterns and sequences. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

More moments of bliss

Festival Mystique in Newcastle (2 days) finished up late yesterday. Did a workshop with Devi (ATS choroeo) - bliss. A lot of my troupe, Black Diamond attended too - bliss bliss. Had a stall selling cholis (thanks to Annabella), pantaloons and tassel belts and Antonia's dreadies and artwork - did pretty well too - bliss bliss bliss. But the best thing is that the Black Diamond dancers and their partners and kiddies, came along to the market/performance day yesterday. I really felt supported by them all. BLISS BLISS BLISS BLISS.

Kylie has posted pics of an "improvised improv" yesterday. Shameela, Gabriella and Ileana also joined in and we improved for about 10 minutes!!! MORE BLISS.

Then, Jean and his performance group from Samba Frog came to the floor, and we just danced and danced. They said they loved playing for the dancers.

Well, today I am a bit tired and still have a lot of unpacking and tidying up to do. First things first, checked tribe and now off to Yoga.

Cheers, Susan

Last Friday night my two classes combined and we had a visiting drummer, Pete from Arabiana Newcastle and Brenton drummed for my students and the tribal troupe. It was a blast! Am thinking of doing this every month, because it isn't often we get a chance to dance to live musicians. Everyone's faces, including Pete and Brenton's were positively shining.

Thanks Pete and Brenton.

i had a dream once.....talking about roving jams

hey everyone

I remember how I used to talk with one of my friends about this awesome thing we both wished would happen - take everything, whatever money, whatever excuses out of the way - imagine if once every now and then everyone in the tribal community would just hear the call to dance and catch a plane/train/bus whatever and gather at a particular location for dance.....just a day or a weekend where we all could share together, grab our drums and dance with THAT girl from over there etc...your post Susan reminded me of that (part of why going to toowoomba is really special for me as we dont get that feeling a lot ourselves to just jam with other groups) .

How far would you travel? seriously if we could find a meeting point what would you do to get there, to experience that awesome feeling of being able to dance with another tribe....I hope we'll experience this at tribal trance fest with Debs plans to do the tribal jam but aside from that - would you be keen to pack the girls and head off for a road trip?

Another dream i had - a social catch up the impossible goal - is it just me?

hi everyone

in the spirit of sharing...it was just about two years ago that I came back from the Tribal Trance fest in the blue mountains, all inspired incredibly by the standard of dancing and the workshops where I'd learned so much. I remember catching up briefly with some of the other teachers before I left Katoomba for breakfast but really felt in amongst the hustle and bustle of rushing to this event or other it was a shame we didnt have some sort of social night - a cocktail party or some event where I could walk up and meet such and such from this tribe, instead of staring at someone's back in a workshop not knowing who they were etc.

In talking to Deb in her earlier planning she asked us if we'd be interested in hosting such an event, to which we jumped at the chance - we're still fairly new and eager on the Tribal scene, actually I kind of feel like a teenager with some groups yet forming after us, but many of my peers already on the scene before. We'd rolled out the red carpet in Brisbane when Urban Qabila and Nina came to town last year for our Feast of the Senses event, and made sure we all got to have some fun at dinner before we got into the serious business of dancing!

Anyway thats where this little dream came about, so I rang around what felt like a million clubs and venues and found one that wasnt too far from most of the action, and after planning with the blossoms we decided to go with a Trivia theme - not to test anyone but to open up some quirky questions and give us all something "to do" while we have a few drinks and meet and greet.

And now with just on 2 months to go, i've got like 22 confirmed attendees....with 12 from my own tribe. I'd really like to get some feedback, as right now I'm just trying to hold onto my motivation and enthusiasm but its hard when - literally a lot of people havent even replied to my emails or messages....and I dont know if this idea was just so out of leftfield or if the tribal community isnt interested like I'd thought they would be.

I guess too when some people have told me their group had decided not to come....I have to wonder - is it the price/the venue/are people shy? is it that they're not landing in sydney til that morning? that they're not interested in getting to know others who embrace this dance with the same fervour that we do?

so I'm just wondering what I should do, if I should keep pushing it (and stressing about the lack of numbers & the big silence)....

seriously, i was thinking i'd like to talk some new stuff here - what do you gals wear on your heads?

I used to have to wear a turban and the sweat that came dripping down my face, as i felt like this massive head of medusa squeezing oh so tightly on my skull (turban head!) and always felt it was punishment. we then went for the metal headwear aka turkmenistan wedding headresses, but they left our faces with green from the metal sometimes, and for sword technique found they got in the way

so now we're back to flowers that coordinate with our outfits. do you think this is an eventual progression?

what do you girls wear on your heads? do you hate the turbans too? should we form a support group even :P ?

I love ATS. Why is this tribe site so DEAD?

I can't blame this outburst of mine on any hormonal imbalance. It seems that we only get posts for events and no discussions. I have posted events to this site, so I can't stow thrones. Guess I am just shitty that ATS is barely alive in Newcastle. Been working at it now for 3 years. Don't get me wrong, I have really enjoyed teaching, mostly because it has been very life affirming and educational for me too.

Newcastle has too many belly dance schools, and with some exceptions, they aren't particularly noted for their expertise in any one style, they just fiddle about with whatever takes their fancy or builds their student numbers. This sounds mean to the teachers who have worked hard and long to build their schools. I take off my hat to them.

I have been the only teacher (who has come very late in age to this kind of enterprise) teaching ATS FCBD. It is a fantastic style of dance - and the camaraderie of the troupe dancers is really lovely. Tribal generally doesn't have the bitchiness between schools that other oriental dance schools experience.

Well, I've had my grumble. It makes me feel better too!!!
Your tribal costuming preferences, and why?

As I trawl through tribe seeking communion with other tribal dancers (and most often it is a very satisfying experience), I come across lots of different interpretations for tribal costuming. My personal preference is the big fluffy skirts (at least 2) and pantaloons - the lovely flattering choli, big hair, tassel belts and, of course, using the zils.

Yet, I see and embrace somewhat (though not necessarily on my figure) contemporary interpretations using flaired pants, and midriff baring tops, edgy hair and lots of dangly hip bits.

I would love a discussion about the metamorphosis from the style, which is my ideal to what is becoming a quite popular pared down look. Could the pared down look be called folkloric or ethnic to somewhere in particular? So, while not denegrating this pared down look (saw some raks gothic performed last night and it really blew me away - thanks Dani) Is this look Gothic meets belly dance, and could it be considered "tribal".

What is your view about how a dance style which uses tribal in its description is considered tribal dance? I am not being judgemental here, but would like to know what other people think.

By the way, I am losing weight and hoping to fit into a Mirahmar outfit in the next few months!!

Cheers, Susan

Woohoo we can now watch 3 vids of Fatchance performing at Tribe Fest 8 on Youtube. Being an IT ninny, I don't know how to put the link into this message.

You know I have been making cholis, BIG pantaloons and tassel belts to sell, and I was wondering about the preference for shisha/kuchi adornments over the tassel belts. Guess what, Carolena is wearing a tassel belt on the new youtube videos. Yeah.

catch up class - what to do mid-term....your thoughts?

hi everyone

I've been tossing ideas with my tribal basics teacher, we run our classes in terms of 10 weeks with the school breaks....and what we find is for about the first 4 weeks there will be people who'll want to join in - some with dance experience who for some reason or other didnt find us in time for term start. Depending where the class is at we'll usually welcome them along explaining we have covered some of the basics so they'll catch up either during term or at the next block. Then at 5 weeks we generally say no more to anyone new joining the class as we're well and truly in the dance by this stage.

My teacher had an idea that we could hold a catch-up class say at 3 - 4 weeks which would give a good overview of where we are with out steps = we teach GC style bdance so we'd be going over the ghawazis and arabics mainly, just an extra focus for the new ones who've joined us to get their equal footing and anyone else interested to get a bit more tuition.

Do any of you do this? had any success? What are your thoughts?

Cheers
Dee

monthly tribal workshop in Murwillumbah/nthn nsw area - looking for takers

HI ladies
yet again I'm sensing there is a growing interest in learning Tribal in the Northern Nsw area and I've been contacted by a couple of dancers around Murwillumbah who seem keen to get a regular class going to learn this style, and I do agree its something that needs to be watered/practiced regularly if its to happen.
I know when we last looked at the costs from Byron it was hard to justify a regular event - but I thought I'd shoot an email out to see who was interested in a once a month workshop which could be run over a saturday afternoon followed by a sunday morning refresh? If you know of anyone who'd be keen to get together to come and learn please get them to send me an email... maybe looking at an hour and half both days....if I know of interest levels I can work on if the costs are feasible for me to commit. I'd hope to be able to do this for around $50 per attendee if we got sufficient interest (would that be in your budget??) with opportunity for half hour privates for any addicts after.
Cheers
Dee

Swords Banned In UK! Re post from Sharyn
BELLYDANCE SWORDS NOW BANNED IN UK!! Wed, April 9, 2008 - 11:29 AM
THIS IS A REPOST FROM by Denise Piggin

Hello all.

Please support you sisters in the UK. We are now banned from purchasing dance swords.

Sad news I'm afraid. I have just spoken to Jonathan Batt, at the home office who has confirmed that we (belly and tribal dancers in the UK) are covered in the VCR (Violent Crimes Reduction Bill).
As Belly dancers, we are not covered in the exemptions of being classed as a 'sporting activity' or a Historical reenactment. While we can perform with our existing swords, if you have public liability insurance. You can no longer purchase a new blade.

This is scary thought, as if we are not included in the exclusions to the ban, the art form of sword dancing will ultimately die out in the UK! my sword was broken recently In a workshop when it was dropped. I now can't get a new one....

The only way we can get this changed for all belly dancers is to contact the home office and request that as a dance form that we are allowed to continue to be allowed to purchase swords, so that we can continue with a beautiful art form.

Please, Please take the time to contact Jonathan and request that he put forward to the Home Office that bellydancers and tribal dancers are made exempt from the VCR Bill. He is a nice guy and has agreed to be the contact point for this query. It will take a huge volume of dancers contacting him to make a difference, so please take the time to write to him.

His contact details are Jonathan.Batt@Homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk

Also if you are a member of a tribe, where this is not mentioned, can you please post information there.

Melusina workshop - eastern suburbs Melbourne April 20th

We are lucky enough to be hosting the wonderful Melusina for a workshop,

EARTH, AIR, WATER & FIRE

Middle Eastern Dance is a very emotionally expressive art form and each belly dance style can be interpreted through elemental imagery, energy and feel. In this fun workshop four miniature dance combinations will be taught that best reflect each of the four elements. EARTH will focus on a grounded,
Tribal/folkloric style sequence; WATER will incorporate sinuous, sensual floor work; AIR will express the light delicacy and elegance of the Classical Egyptian style; and FIRE sparks with the energy and joy of gypsy dance. The combinations will be accompanied with the appropriate music and expression associated with each style.

Sunday April 20th
Venue: Mooroolbark, Melbourne, Australia
2-4pm
Cost $40

Drop me a line if you are interested in coming along.....

tribal/ goth leather belly dance

you may see photo's on page 5 in my pics 75.00 plus shipping
This is a hand made costume. This is the 1st and only one of this style I have made. It is very Gothic and Tribal Fusion worthy. Both bra and belt are lined. The bra is very sturdy will hold it's shape well. The bra will fit a 36 C/D This costume will work great for new students, hobbyist class recitals, parties, Goth night, belly fusion, photos, and performances.
This is an original one of a kind costume.

The bra will fit a 36 C/D. The bra is cover in a black fabric for the base. Over the base of the bra is a row 100% leather fringe . This fringe can be cut into thinner strip if you want or it can be tapered into a v-shaped or left as is. The neck straps are 42 inches long and will fasten criss cross across the back with D-rings. The length of the bra from d-ring to D-ring is 24 inches.

The belt base is covered in a patch design of various colors and texture of 100% leather. The belt is 36 inches long not including the tie ends. The tie ends are about 15 inches long. The belt is lined and had an elastic casing in the back that can be gathered to fit better around the hips for the dancer with curves. If you need to have the belt shorten it can be done. The belt has 3 grouping of leather fringe that are also 100 % leather and is floor length. Between the grouping of fringe there are metal chains with bells for sound and movement.

This is the 1st and only one of this kind that I have made so far, so it is a one of a kind piece of wearable art. .This is for a dancer who is daring, dark and want's to be notice.
email with any questions or more photos
Collective Soul 1 this week

Hi all

couldn't keep the nerves in so had to post that the Paulette tour is just about to start!

I am off to Sydney on Tues and am looking forward to meeting lots of other nervous and excited dancers for the collective Soul 1. Must say that my zilling leaves quite alot to be desired, but hopefully this will help!

this time last year we had Nina over to teach us a workshop (if you get a chance to ever do something with her take it!), which was brilliant (lots of great improv formations), and after that we decided that we wanted to catch up with her again, so when she said she had Paulette coming, we decided to fly up to support her decision to hold a workshop. So in a few weeks we will be meeting some more tribalists from the other end of the country - south meets north kinda thing!

anyway better go look at some dvd's, read some notes etc

Yippee - I am excited (jumping up and down on the spot)
tribal jam anyone? Newcastle/Lake Macquarie/Hunter? Anyone?

Looks like we might be able to get an informal tribal get together happening up our way. Have had some feedback from Central Coast dancers, how about you upper Hunter gals?

To re-iterate what I've said elsewhere, this is an informal get together. It is not affiliated with any dance school in particular. It is an opportunity for any drummers/musicians/tribal dancers to get together and have a jam.

Some suggestions have been that there is a small cover charge to cover venue hire.

We could have a swap meet as well. Try out some works in progress (dance or costumes).
Bras! Where do you buy your coin bra base?

It's coin bra sewing time for me again, can anyone recommend a good place in Oz for buying a bra to use as the base? I need something DD cup!! Have seen some plain black bra bases with ties for sale on the internet but they are overseas sites & I need to have mine done in a few weeks time so I don't know if they'd ship over fast enough! Last bra I used was a convertable & it didn't work too well, & looked it huge! - so if you've found a great one in a shop recently or bought something good online with quick delivery I'd be grateful for your advice :-)

Have just attended my first specialist Sword class with DEE of Tribal Blossoms in Brisbane and WOW !! What an experience !!
I've actually been performing with Sword through another troupe for the past year, but I'm now totally embarrassed that I've performed at public events with such a lack of skill and knowledge on the subject.
So..if anyone is interested in being professional with Sword, Dee of Tribal Blossoms is highly recommended.

BellyDance Superstars Vol. 4 song Desperately Needed!

Does anyone have a copy of Belly Dance Superstars Vol.4? I am desperately needing one song off that CD to rehearse for an upcoming performance: Track 13 (Bonus Track) Drum Solo Wassan Pharaoun by Issam Houshan.
I don't want the whole CD as it is predominantly cabaret which I cant use as a tribal dancer. I have tried to find an mp3 of the song to buy but it seems limited to America only. If someone has it and would be willing to email me that song (probably in a zip file) it would be hugely appreciated! If anyone else has any ideas of what I can do, please post back!!
Thanks, Sophie
:)

Handmade Tribal Belt for Sale!

Hi, I am clearing out all my unworn costumes and have decided to sell one of my tassel belts. The first 2 photos in my album are of the belt. It is very earthy toned, all browns, rusts, oranges, yellows and has a long decorative bit that sits down along your backside and a smaller piece that sits under your tummy. It will not fit a very slender person but would fit from a size large 14 up probably. It does up with velcro at the side so can accommodate a few diff sizes and is very sumptuous looking! It took me quite awhile to make as I had to construct the actual belt then spent ages making all the tassels but I was pretty happy with it. I just made a belt a little while later that I prefer wearing now than this one so time to go! I didnt wear it that much so it is still in excellent condition and has a total of 44 tassels.
I am wanting around $150 due to the time it took me to make it and the amount of wool it has on it.
I also will be selling a coin bra with stacks of silver tribal coins sitting underneath a large strip of shisha mirrors with a blue/purple rolled beaded edging along the top. It also has a large kuchi triangular dangle piece as a centerpiece. I will load up a photo as soon as I get my camera back. I will be wanting around the $150 as well as it really has a bucket load of materials of it and took me a long time to make.
If anyone is interested, feel free to email for more details or to negotiate a price. i can also email more photos of each item etc.
Thanks, Sophie

Just arrived home from the Blue Mountains. Along with others from Australia and NZ, I've now got my FCBD GS Certification. Yeah!!!!! After 3 days of hard work at the intensive, I have sore tummy muscles from doing lots of belly rolls and practising laybacks. It was great to see so many great dancers on the weekend, and the hugh half circle improv was fantastic to watch when in the chorus.

Having just about a whole year to think about the intensive coming up, it is hard to believe that part is now over and so now it is on to more dancing and building a bigger tribal dance base up here in Newcastle.

Cheers, Susan

Hi everyone

hope you are all well. I'm pleased to announce we are now selling copies of our Feast of the Senses DVD - our showcase event highlighting some beautiful tribal performances from groups in Brisbane, and surrounding areas including performances from Urban Qabila, Nina from Gypsy Rain, DrumDance, Downunder Tribal, Kazuri Tribe, Kismet, Saahirah Ravyn & of course the Blossoms.

DVDs are $40 with funds going to the Qld Cancer Council from each sale :)

Also - for anyone looking for Tribal in Brisbane, the Blossoms are expanding - September 26 we'll be offering classes in our new location at the Brisbane Powerhouse....so we'll have Tribal Basics classes running in two locations (thus answering the age old issue of people in Brissy not wanting to cross the river - we are now northside AND southside)

All info on the newly painted, fresh website www.tribalblossoms.com

Lastly - I cant wait to see Devi next week, will be great to finally catch up after what feels ages :)

have a great day everyone!

Zaar Bellydance still kicking!

It seems that many people in the Tribal Dance community, who know of Zaar Bellydance, are under the impression that we are no longer dancing since Bianka left for an indefinite break! I just wanted to get the word out that this is far from the case! While Bianka was the Artistic Director of Zaar for some years, we actually started as a cooperative dance troupe with the founding members of Zaar being myself, Bianka, Zade, Ange, Karin and Julie (no longer dancing with us). It kinda hurts that people have just assumed that we have fallen apart since Bianka left. While it has taken us a little while to get going again (primarily due to our other personal, family and work committments), we ae getting back into the scene. We are performing at the Melbourne Mind Body Spirit Festival on Sunday the 10th of June at 1.30pm (I think:)!) and at Warburton Winterfest on Friday the 22nd of June. Zade has also been teaching Tribal Style Bellydance at various venues since the start of the year. We would also still love to be involved in Bellydance events that go on down in the city so please remember that Zaar Bellydance is still definately alive and kicking!!!!
Thanks, Sophie:)

"I've been bellydancing for ten years now, five of which have been pure ATS with The Kismet Tribe. Currently I dance tribal fusion with the
Spirit Sisters and love making kookie choreographies with them. I also love the feeling of dancing ATS improv – to me this is the essence of
tribal. That magical feeling of connecting with other women in dance and moving as one is only possible with improv…so join me for classes to make that magic (or at least to have fun trying)!"

artist wanting to do a trade

hi, I hope this isn't unwelcome. I'm new here, and reasonably new to tribal as well. and like many people I'm totally addicted to it. I want to learn more and more, refine my technique, blossom into a beautiful dancer... you get the picture.
I won't give you my starving art student sob story, but the thing is I don't have much money. I wish I did, I would probably spend it all on tribal classes. So instead, I am offering my skills as an artist to the tribal teachers out there, should they need graphic artwork for a website or desire a beautifully painted portrait of themselves, in exchange for teaching me this dance.

if you are at all interested, please please, make me an offer. I live about an hour out of Newcastle, NSW, and I will travel if I can. my specialties are portraits and the human figure. you can view a little selection of my artwork at http://nonipony.deviantart.com but that is not all I can do. email me: spaceinvader@zeitgeistaustralia.com

thanks :)

TRIBAL BLOSSOMS FEAST OF THE SENSES

What a wonderful evening! I was mesmerized from start to finish. Food was delicious. If I hadn't been so excited I would have eaten much more. Julie and the girls opened the evening with a delightful Song of Peace which set the mood for the entire night. Guest Artists were all very clever and obviously enjoyed themselves. The Blossoms were, as expected, absolutely lovely and their performances held the interest of everyone in the audience with their loving fun attitudes, their great costumes and their delightful dance. Even though I'm a "newbee", Dee, Gay and the rest of the Tribe made me feel extremely comfortable and welcome on the night, and I'm so looking forward to becoming a fully-fledged Blossom.

as u know shipping from the USA can be a killa, IF the shops will ship to you at all...

But after much enquiring, negotiating & frustration... i managed to find a trustworthy store with only a few in stock at the mo and would ship to Australia fully insured. The shipping price was only US$10 difference between shipping 1 as opposed to shipping 4... so you can see why i am on here looking for partner/s. I am not making any financial gain out of this... I just want my sword without having to sell my first born child for it. They will end up costing approxmately AU$160 landed in Brisbane each. Posting on costs to persons outside Brisbane will then make it cost a extra. Only serious enquiries please...
