I'm a French dancer from Germany, already reading this, you can guess I love travelling.
I'm thinking of participating to the Mid North Coast Bellydance Festival 2009, hold in Kempsey by Shanna.
http://www.festival.ishtarbellydance.com/modules/wfchannel/
Anyone been there already? Do you have experience to share? I mean, it's a huge trip (and a lot of money), so I'd love to have some opinions.

Should I be there. I hope to meet some of you and I would be happy to perform or teach. I'm not everyday in Australia :)

Hello

With the fast arriving end of 2008, its getting time for the Blossoms to start planning our next Feast of the Senses event - due for Winter 2009. We began Feast of the Senses with a view to creating a Tribal-themed event in Brisbane highlighting both local and regional & interstate talent. We also incorporated an Art display within the venue, and artworks were sold, food was enjoyed and a great time was had by all!

Afterwards we got to thinking, with the view to repeating our event every two years - and expanding on what was offered. We're now looking to run Feast of the Senses as a two-day mini-festival - with a Tribal-focused performance night at a swanky venue (to be finalised) and a day of workshops aimed at the Tribal Bellydancer to enjoy. Ideally this would occur with a Saturday night gala, then all the workshops at our inner-city venue on Sunday kicking off at 10am with a variety of classes on offer running til about 4pm when we'll all join in for a drumming/dancing jam at the end.

I'm looking to offer an all inclusive ticket for any interested attendees - with an early bird price of $100 which will include Gala night entry, and up to 5 workshops on offer. The workshops will be running consecutively so you can get as much or as little as you want - your ticket will provide you entry to any class you wish to book for....there'll also be stalls available with tribal goodies, and food will be available to enjoy in your break. We'll also have space within the market area for you to practice with your dance buddies what you've just learned, or relax with a massage or just chill in the corner over a cup of chai.

I'm trying to lock in two dates right now - with a view to either June 27 & 28 OR July 25 & 26 - if you have something planned or know of another event around this time please let me know, as I'd lock not to compete for our dancing interest where possible. I hope to have dates confirmed by Christmas or sooner, at which time I'll also be able to send out an info pack about areas close to our venues to stay that may suit your troupe. I know theres some great offers on sale via the various airlines so the sooner I can get this info to you the better - flights to Brisbane are bargains right now - you can fly to & from Sydney for approx $200, to & from Adelaide & Cairns for approx $300, to & from Tassie for approx $135 each way, Perth is about $300 each way at the moment.

I'm trying to get interest right now - from Tribal Troupes who'd like to come and perform, Students who think this is right up their alley - as well as some feedback of what you'd like to see on offer from the workshops. We've got some of the workshop content planned but there is still an avenue for additional Tribal workshops if you'd like to present....please talk to me and help make Feast of the Senses 2009 fantastic!!!

Cheers
Dee

I'm putting a call out now to let everyone know the deadline is coming up for the Tribal Allsorts night - as its a catered event we need to get all payment and numbers before the event to let the venue know (and to stop those unflattering grey hairs :) ). We'll have prizes and plans in place only for those who book and pre-pay so please note we wont be selling tickets at the door.

so if you or your troupe would like to come along - please email me at tribalblossoms@iinet.net.au before AUGUST 22

I understand some people have been afraid they havent known too much to take part, so please know this is just a cocktail event, a low-key chance for anyone who's interested in meeting the tribal community and to give us all a chance to network - given how we'll be focused so much on the workshops this is just a chance to have that conversation and meet up outside of the dance class!

So far tribes attending include the ladies from Triballive, UrbanQabila, Gypsy Noir and Tribal Blossoms....we're all pretty friendly so come along!

From Amy, via Betsy:
Hi tribal dancers,
I'm sending this to try to suss out some feedback on my idea of
hosting a tribal dance party for anyone interested in tribal style
bellydance in WA.

I think it's time for us to come together as a community of tribal
dancers in WA. There are now so many groups and individual dancers
out there who I, for one, would love to hook up with and just have a
dance with.

So my intention is to have a party at a venue near Freo (which is not
someone's studio; neutral ground and all that). We have in mind a big
lofty space where we can light up our fire toys (the venue is not
confirmed yet tho). And the date we are thinking is Halloween; Friday
31 October. The event will be not for profit, though we would have to
charge a small entry fee to cover venue hire costs (less than $5). I
anticipate lots of candles, a variety of music, fire toys, lots of
dancers dressed tribalesque... it will be a blast!...and I would like
to keep it kinda home spun, so would ask people to bring and share
food and drinks. There would be no set performance line up, but if
your group wants to perform, just seize the sound system and do it!

As I've said, the event will be not for profit, any left over funds
will be donated to a charity (non-belly related) and it is also not
for self-promotion, though I'd encourage you to bring info to
exchange about your classes, events etc. I really want this to be in
the genuine spirit of bringing together the tribal dance community in
WA, so this would be an open invitation to anyone who is into tribal
dancing, regardless of whether you have just dabbled a bit or have
devoted your last 10 years to it!

At this stage, i'm just looking to see if this idea is a goer and for
any ideas or comments about it. (eg; is friday to difficult for
country girls?) and how many people might be interested. If I get
positive feedback, expect an invitation soon!

I've tried to send this to as many email addresses as I can but
please pass this email on to anyone you think might be interested, I
would hate for anyone or any group to be missed out just because I
don't know about them. Please reply with any comments to
tribalive@... I look forward to hearing from you within the next
week or so, so we can start planning in earnest :)

Love
Amy
Tribalive!

The big thing is the drummer who is teaching said he had never drummed for ATS dancers before. He is fully aware of the ATS improv situation, so was asking me what the cues to a drummer were ... I confess do not know any cues you would give to a drummer, because we have not had the opportunity/luxury of a live drummer before at our classes or performances - except for a bit mosh pit tribal jam at the end of concerts and soirees.

So his question is what are the cues for

Changing Rhythm
Faster
Slower
Loud
Quiet
Finish

If you were working all the time with the same drummer, you would build your own vocabulary of cues, or keep to agreed patterns and sequences. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

How far would you travel? seriously if we could find a meeting point what would you do to get there, to experience that awesome feeling of being able to dance with another tribe....I hope we'll experience this at tribal trance fest with Debs plans to do the tribal jam but aside from that - would you be keen to pack the girls and head off for a road trip?

hi everyone

in the spirit of sharing...it was just about two years ago that I came back from the Tribal Trance fest in the blue mountains, all inspired incredibly by the standard of dancing and the workshops where I'd learned so much. I remember catching up briefly with some of the other teachers before I left Katoomba for breakfast but really felt in amongst the hustle and bustle of rushing to this event or other it was a shame we didnt have some sort of social night - a cocktail party or some event where I could walk up and meet such and such from this tribe, instead of staring at someone's back in a workshop not knowing who they were etc.

In talking to Deb in her earlier planning she asked us if we'd be interested in hosting such an event, to which we jumped at the chance - we're still fairly new and eager on the Tribal scene, actually I kind of feel like a teenager with some groups yet forming after us, but many of my peers already on the scene before. We'd rolled out the red carpet in Brisbane when Urban Qabila and Nina came to town last year for our Feast of the Senses event, and made sure we all got to have some fun at dinner before we got into the serious business of dancing!

Anyway thats where this little dream came about, so I rang around what felt like a million clubs and venues and found one that wasnt too far from most of the action, and after planning with the blossoms we decided to go with a Trivia theme - not to test anyone but to open up some quirky questions and give us all something "to do" while we have a few drinks and meet and greet.

And now with just on 2 months to go, i've got like 22 confirmed attendees....with 12 from my own tribe. I'd really like to get some feedback, as right now I'm just trying to hold onto my motivation and enthusiasm but its hard when - literally a lot of people havent even replied to my emails or messages....and I dont know if this idea was just so out of leftfield or if the tribal community isnt interested like I'd thought they would be.

I guess too when some people have told me their group had decided not to come....I have to wonder - is it the price/the venue/are people shy? is it that they're not landing in sydney til that morning? that they're not interested in getting to know others who embrace this dance with the same fervour that we do?

so I'm just wondering what I should do, if I should keep pushing it (and stressing about the lack of numbers & the big silence)....

I can't blame this outburst of mine on any hormonal imbalance. It seems that we only get posts for events and no discussions. I have posted events to this site, so I can't stow thrones. Guess I am just shitty that ATS is barely alive in Newcastle. Been working at it now for 3 years. Don't get me wrong, I have really enjoyed teaching, mostly because it has been very life affirming and educational for me too.

Newcastle has too many belly dance schools, and with some exceptions, they aren't particularly noted for their expertise in any one style, they just fiddle about with whatever takes their fancy or builds their student numbers. This sounds mean to the teachers who have worked hard and long to build their schools. I take off my hat to them.

I have been the only teacher (who has come very late in age to this kind of enterprise) teaching ATS FCBD. It is a fantastic style of dance - and the camaraderie of the troupe dancers is really lovely. Tribal generally doesn't have the bitchiness between schools that other oriental dance schools experience.

Well, I've had my grumble. It makes me feel better too!!!

My personal preference is the big fluffy skirts (at least 2) and pantaloons - the lovely flattering choli, big hair, tassel belts and, of course, using the zils.

Yet, I see and embrace somewhat (though not necessarily on my figure) contemporary interpretations using flaired pants, and midriff baring tops, edgy hair and lots of dangly hip bits.

I would love a discussion about the metamorphosis from the style, which is my ideal to what is becoming a quite popular pared down look. Could the pared down look be called folkloric or ethnic to somewhere in particular? So, while not denegrating this pared down look (saw some raks gothic performed last night and it really blew me away - thanks Dani) Is this look Gothic meets belly dance, and could it be considered "tribal".

What is your view about how a dance style which uses tribal in its description is considered tribal dance? I am not being judgemental here, but would like to know what other people think.

I've been tossing ideas with my tribal basics teacher, we run our classes in terms of 10 weeks with the school breaks....and what we find is for about the first 4 weeks there will be people who'll want to join in - some with dance experience who for some reason or other didnt find us in time for term start. Depending where the class is at we'll usually welcome them along explaining we have covered some of the basics so they'll catch up either during term or at the next block. Then at 5 weeks we generally say no more to anyone new joining the class as we're well and truly in the dance by this stage.

My teacher had an idea that we could hold a catch-up class say at 3 - 4 weeks which would give a good overview of where we are with out steps = we teach GC style bdance so we'd be going over the ghawazis and arabics mainly, just an extra focus for the new ones who've joined us to get their equal footing and anyone else interested to get a bit more tuition.

Do any of you do this? had any success? What are your thoughts?
yet again I'm sensing there is a growing interest in learning Tribal in the Northern Nsw area and I've been contacted by a couple of dancers around Murwillumbah who seem keen to get a regular class going to learn this style, and I do agree its something that needs to be watered/practiced regularly if its to happen.
I know when we last looked at the costs from Byron it was hard to justify a regular event - but I thought I'd shoot an email out to see who was interested in a once a month workshop which could be run over a saturday afternoon followed by a sunday morning refresh? If you know of anyone who'd be keen to get together to come and learn please get them to send me an email... maybe looking at an hour and half both days....if I know of interest levels I can work on if the costs are feasible for me to commit. I'd hope to be able to do this for around $50 per attendee if we got sufficient interest (would that be in your budget??) with opportunity for half hour privates for any addicts after.
BELLYDANCE SWORDS NOW BANNED IN UK!! Wed, April 9, 2008 - 11:29 AM
THIS IS A REPOST FROM by Denise Piggin

Hello all.

Please support you sisters in the UK. We are now banned from purchasing dance swords.

Sad news I'm afraid. I have just spoken to Jonathan Batt, at the home office who has confirmed that we (belly and tribal dancers in the UK) are covered in the VCR (Violent Crimes Reduction Bill).
As Belly dancers, we are not covered in the exemptions of being classed as a 'sporting activity' or a Historical reenactment. While we can perform with our existing swords, if you have public liability insurance. You can no longer purchase a new blade.

This is scary thought, as if we are not included in the exclusions to the ban, the art form of sword dancing will ultimately die out in the UK! my sword was broken recently In a workshop when it was dropped. I now can't get a new one....

The only way we can get this changed for all belly dancers is to contact the home office and request that as a dance form that we are allowed to continue to be allowed to purchase swords, so that we can continue with a beautiful art form.

Please, Please take the time to contact Jonathan and request that he put forward to the Home Office that bellydancers and tribal dancers are made exempt from the VCR Bill. He is a nice guy and has agreed to be the contact point for this query. It will take a huge volume of dancers contacting him to make a difference, so please take the time to write to him.

His contact details are Jonathan.Batt@Homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk

Also if you are a member of a tribe, where this is not mentioned, can you please post information there.

Middle Eastern Dance is a very emotionally expressive art form and each belly dance style can be interpreted through elemental imagery, energy and feel. In this fun workshop four miniature dance combinations will be taught that best reflect each of the four elements. EARTH will focus on a grounded,
Tribal/folkloric style sequence; WATER will incorporate sinuous, sensual floor work; AIR will express the light delicacy and elegance of the Classical Egyptian style; and FIRE sparks with the energy and joy of gypsy dance. The combinations will be accompanied with the appropriate music and expression associated with each style.
This is a hand made costume. This is the 1st and only one of this style I have made. It is very Gothic and Tribal Fusion worthy. Both bra and belt are lined. The bra is very sturdy will hold it's shape well. The bra will fit a 36 C/D This costume will work great for new students, hobbyist class recitals, parties, Goth night, belly fusion, photos, and performances.
This is an original one of a kind costume.

The bra will fit a 36 C/D. The bra is cover in a black fabric for the base. Over the base of the bra is a row 100% leather fringe . This fringe can be cut into thinner strip if you want or it can be tapered into a v-shaped or left as is. The neck straps are 42 inches long and will fasten criss cross across the back with D-rings. The length of the bra from d-ring to D-ring is 24 inches.

The belt base is covered in a patch design of various colors and texture of 100% leather. The belt is 36 inches long not including the tie ends. The tie ends are about 15 inches long. The belt is lined and had an elastic casing in the back that can be gathered to fit better around the hips for the dancer with curves. If you need to have the belt shorten it can be done. The belt has 3 grouping of leather fringe that are also 100 % leather and is floor length. Between the grouping of fringe there are metal chains with bells for sound and movement.

This is the 1st and only one of this kind that I have made so far, so it is a one of a kind piece of wearable art. .This is for a dancer who is daring, dark and want's to be notice.
email with any questions or more photos
I am off to Sydney on Tues and am looking forward to meeting lots of other nervous and excited dancers for the collective Soul 1. Must say that my zilling leaves quite alot to be desired, but hopefully this will help!

this time last year we had Nina over to teach us a workshop (if you get a chance to ever do something with her take it!), which was brilliant (lots of great improv formations), and after that we decided that we wanted to catch up with her again, so when she said she had Paulette coming, we decided to fly up to support her decision to hold a workshop. So in a few weeks we will be meeting some more tribalists from the other end of the country - south meets north kinda thing!

anyway better go look at some dvd's, read some notes etc
Have seen some plain black bra bases with ties for sale on the internet but they are overseas sites & I need to have mine done in a few weeks time so I don't know if they'd ship over fast enough! Last bra I used was a convertable & it didn't work too well, & looked it huge! - so if you've found a great one in a shop recently or bought something good online with quick delivery I'd be grateful for your advice :-)

Hi, I am clearing out all my unworn costumes and have decided to sell one of my tassel belts. The first 2 photos in my album are of the belt. It is very earthy toned, all browns, rusts, oranges, yellows and has a long decorative bit that sits down along your backside and a smaller piece that sits under your tummy. It will not fit a very slender person but would fit from a size large 14 up probably. It does up with velcro at the side so can accommodate a few diff sizes and is very sumptuous looking! It took me quite awhile to make as I had to construct the actual belt then spent ages making all the tassels but I was pretty happy with it. I just made a belt a little while later that I prefer wearing now than this one so time to go! I didnt wear it that much so it is still in excellent condition and has a total of 44 tassels.
I am wanting around $150 due to the time it took me to make it and the amount of wool it has on it.
I also will be selling a coin bra with stacks of silver tribal coins sitting underneath a large strip of shisha mirrors with a blue/purple rolled beaded edging along the top. It also has a large kuchi triangular dangle piece as a centerpiece. I will load up a photo as soon as I get my camera back. I will be wanting around the $150 as well as it really has a bucket load of materials of it and took me a long time to make.
If anyone is interested, feel free to email for more details or to negotiate a price. i can also email more photos of each item etc.
Thanks, Sophie

I just wanted to get the word out that this is far from the case! While Bianka was the Artistic Director of Zaar for some years, we actually started as a cooperative dance troupe with the founding members of Zaar being myself, Bianka, Zade, Ange, Karin and Julie (no longer dancing with us). It kinda hurts that people have just assumed that we have fallen apart since Bianka left. While it has taken us a little while to get going again (primarily due to our other personal, family and work committments), we ae getting back into the scene. We are performing at the Melbourne Mind Body Spirit Festival on Sunday the 10th of June at 1.30pm (I think:)!) and at Warburton Winterfest on Friday the 22nd of June. Zade has also been teaching Tribal Style Bellydance at various venues since the start of the year. We would also still love to be involved in Bellydance events that go on down in the city so please remember that Zaar Bellydance is still definately alive and kicking!!!!
"I've been bellydancing for ten years now, five of which have been pure ATS with The Kismet Tribe. Currently I dance tribal fusion with the
Spirit Sisters and love making kookie choreographies with them. I also love the feeling of dancing ATS improv – to me this is the essence of
tribal. That magical feeling of connecting with other women in dance and moving as one is only possible with improv…so join me for classes to make that magic (or at least to have fun trying)!"

I won't give you my starving art student sob story, but the thing is I don't have much money. I wish I did, I would probably spend it all on tribal classes. So instead, I am offering my skills as an artist to the tribal teachers out there, should they need graphic artwork for a website or desire a beautifully painted portrait of themselves, in exchange for teaching me this dance.

if you are at all interested, please please, make me an offer. I live about an hour out of Newcastle, NSW, and I will travel if I can. my specialties are portraits and the human figure. you can view a little selection of my artwork at http://nonipony.deviantart.com but that is not all I can do. email me: spaceinvader@zeitgeistaustralia.com

Julie and the girls opened the evening with a delightful Song of Peace which set the mood for the entire night. Guest Artists were all very clever and obviously enjoyed themselves. The Blossoms were, as expected, absolutely lovely and their performances held the interest of everyone in the audience with their loving fun attitudes, their great costumes and their delightful dance. Even though I'm a "newbee", Dee, Gay and the rest of the Tribe made me feel extremely comfortable and welcome on the night, and I'm so looking forward to becoming a fully-fledged Blossom.

I started teaching ATS in Newcastle in 2005 when Silk Caravan's ATS teacher left the group. FCBD format suited me because as a beginner at the time, it was very easy to follow Carolena's DVD instructions and pass them on to the students.

Two years has passed since then and I have learned so much more of ATS with excellent teachers. I have had a short break from regular weekly teaching ATS, and am now going to present an ATS Tribal Basics workshop in Newcastle in July. If you want details of the workshop, please email me at sgleeson@idl.net.au
