catch up class - what to do mid-term....your thoughts?

hi everyone

I've been tossing ideas with my tribal basics teacher, we run our classes in terms of 10 weeks with the school breaks....and what we find is for about the first 4 weeks there will be people who'll want to join in - some with dance experience who for some reason or other didnt find us in time for term start. Depending where the class is at we'll usually welcome them along explaining we have covered some of the basics so they'll catch up either during term or at the next block. Then at 5 weeks we generally say no more to anyone new joining the class as we're well and truly in the dance by this stage.

My teacher had an idea that we could hold a catch-up class say at 3 - 4 weeks which would give a good overview of where we are with out steps = we teach GC style bdance so we'd be going over the ghawazis and arabics mainly, just an extra focus for the new ones who've joined us to get their equal footing and anyone else interested to get a bit more tuition.

Do any of you do this? had any success? What are your thoughts?

Cheers
Dee

  • This actually sounds like a really good idea - I usually accept students up to week three, but not after that (because I start getting into abdominal work as well as the stuff that you really need the basics for).
So having a catch-up class to really make sure that those fundamentals are down sounds like it would be the way to go, but I would probably do it at the 3 - 4 week mark.
I guess it also depends on the teaching set up - if you have more than one basics class running during the week, you can always tell the student to catch up by taking other classes to bring them up to speed.
  • What about a mid term basic technique workshop that went for two hours?
    • i like this idea a lot.

fyi we have only the one tribal basics class which runs for an hour, my classes are then beyond basics/tribal technique which is 1.5 hours then troupe which is 1.5 hours. in addition to this i have a sunday session class once a month open to the beyond basics & troupe which is like a private class where they bring what THEY want to work on, just an hour of their focus. Then I do a 2 hour workshop once a month open to everyone (these last two are brand new introductions but give that extra bit of dance for the committed ones)

On top of that I have a demanding job which I love but yeah no time for any more basics classes, and I'd rather have one full class than 2 that were half full kinda thing. So we're thinking with winter especially we may try this out - a 2 hour catch up open to the basics girls who are enrolled and allow others to join in....

what do you girls think about offering winter a bit cheaper? we've done it before where I try and fight the winter drop out...
      • I wouldn't be inclined to drop your class prices during winter, do you offer a discount if someone pays for a term up front? Or run a "free" workshop for the students who pay for a full term. Kind of as a winter bonus. Or have an attendance raffle, if someone comes to all classes, their name gets put into a draw for a tribal goodie (some kuchi coins, a pair of earrings).
