seriously, i was thinking i'd like to talk some new stuff here - what do you gals wear on your heads?
I used to have to wear a turban and the sweat that came dripping down my face, as i felt like this massive head of medusa squeezing oh so tightly on my skull (turban head!) and always felt it was punishment. we then went for the metal headwear aka turkmenistan wedding headresses, but they left our faces with green from the metal sometimes, and for sword technique found they got in the way
so now we're back to flowers that coordinate with our outfits. do you think this is an eventual progression?
what do you girls wear on your heads? do you hate the turbans too? should we form a support group even :P ?

Re: i hate Turbans. ...
Fri, June 27, 2008 - 1:30 AMBetween my 2 tribes, we chop and change depending on the dance, the weather, the rest of our costumes and general consensus! Perth is pretty warm most of the year so I can relate to the dripping sweat and the headache with most forms of head wear.
I havent worn a turban at all with Free Spirit, (GC based), and I'm not sure they ever have...I'll have to ask! We have coloured dreadies and a flowery headband, usually worn seperately. Sometimes we add a veil and other times, wear just a simple flower or 2 and maybe a scarf as a headband. We did perform at a masquerade party once and made amazing masks ... talk about OTT...but that my girls!!
Tribalive! (ATS based) have designed a pretty slip on headband with sari patchwork material and decorated with kuchi, shells, coins etc for an instant 'dressed up' look. Recently we had a yearning for turbans again and introduced some of the newbies to the fun! I think the turbans just add something magic (once youve got the b***** things on and secure!) Personally I still think its a fantastic look and feel, especially when youre short like me....and at the moment - short on hair as well!! I have worn my wigs in a couple of performances and they are soooo hot, and itchy and i'm constantly worried if they are on straight ...or even staying on! Also, the act of getting together and helping each other get the turbans on, sharing scarves, bits of jewelry, flowers etc is a lovely part of the tribal 'bonding'!
Anyway.. I think head wear can vary to suit the climate, the costume, the music or the whim of the group. -

Fri, June 27, 2008 - 7:48 AMI'll join your I hate turbans support group!! We've never actually worn them to perform in my troupe, which is good coz I think they make me look older & fatter & that's two things I could do without!!! ;-) So it's hair flowers all the way, with tassels & whatever other dangly bits take my fancy on the day poked in, and usually an Indian head piece (and I really must get off my butt and make myself a turkoman button headband like I've been meaning to for months!!) -

Re: i hate Turbans. ...
Fri, June 27, 2008 - 3:30 PMI agree with you Betsy. I am short with a small head and the turban just balances things out. I don't mind wearing them when it is warm, but I do think Newcastle, being by the sea is not so hot, and then we don't wear the turbans all day. By the way, we haven't worn them for about 18 months anyway. Getting together with the troupe and trying out turban stuff, sharing and building them together is a lot of fun.
I do struggle with the less constructed look, and my small head, high forehead and fine hair makes it difficult to keep things attached and in place. Haven't tried a full on wig, though someone I know does use them and she looks fantastic.
With our little troupe, the variations in head wear does look a little odd, big red dreads to the turban head, but somehow it still works. You've got to admit it, the whole costuming bit in tribal really does look fantastic to the uninitiated and the diehards alike.
Thanks Dee for a new subject!
Cheers, Susan
